Diversity

“There never were in the world two opinions alike, no more than two hairs or two grains; the most universal quality is diversity” - Michel de Montaigne
As part of a holistic education, we strive to develop a diverse and vibrant student body. We believe it is good for all of us to come to know people who are different from ourselves, and the school environment is one of the best places to grow friendships, understanding, and appreciation of differences. All families are welcome and respected at our school. Our student body reflects a broad socioeconomic and cultural diversity.
Oak Hill School is more ethnically diverse than our town of Eugene, Oregon. We are one of, if not the, most socioeconomically diverse independent schools in the Pacific Northwest. Thanks to these statistics, our community members are rich in varying traditions, cultures, beliefs, and opinions. Collectively, we speak English, Spanish, Mandarin, Russian, French, Hebrew, Korean, and Farsi. We are Democrats, Republicans, Socialists, Libertarians, and undeclared. Some of us are devoutly religious. Others are not. Half of us pay full tuition. Half receive financial aid. Many of us are from Eugene. Many are from other states, and a number are from other countries.
In spite of this diversity, we share three common goals: we value quality education, we value success, and we value one another.
Thanks to our small size, our mentalities, and our backgrounds, Oak Hill students are immersed in a tight-knit community where friends and classmates are likely quite different from each other. What a special gift to have--the authentic learning that comes from interactions with intelligent individuals who are truly different from yourself.
